13 years!

Today is my blog’s 13th birthday. And the image I’m choosing to share is a wood sculpture Terri and I bought in New Orleans from the blackest man I’ve ever met. All the men in the sculpture are interlocked and he told us this was carved from a single block of wood by members of the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. They called it “Unity”. We call it “Five Guy”. Happy birthday, teenager!

The Sentry of the Hives

I learned a lot about bees this summer. For instance, there are actual sentry bees that monitor who enters and leaves the hive. And scout bees travel up to five miles looking for plants with flowing nectar. They return to the hive and walk across the comb to show the direction the bees need to travel. And they communicate the distance by speed of their wings as they walk across. (I think.)

I also learned that the bees won't bother you if you are near the hive-- unless you are in their flight path, so avoid the front.

Terri and I bought the metal bee to put there. I found out that pounding nails that close to the hive causes a disturbing vibration which got me stung three times.

Looking forward to watching next month's honey harvest!
