Wake up the echoes

The "Golden Dome" on the administration building at University of Notre Dame. Yesterday was a perfect autumn day to experience the traditions of Notre Dame football-- the procession of the team to the pre-game Mass, the steak sandwiches served by the students, the marching band entering the stadium, and the game itself.

This day was especially emotional as the school remembered student Declan Sullivan's tragic death with a moment of silence before the game and the playing of Alma Mater in his honor at halftime.

Famous rails

Immortalized in the Steve Goodman song, City of New Orleans, these are the very steel rails that "still ain't heard the news."

Breakfast

The quick breakfast-- half order of Bob Evans biscuits and sausage gravy and coffee.

West Side King

Lots of fun-- great costumes and music. Later, I thought about how the urban version might go...think Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story.

Family lives in nice neighborhood and has a son. Uncle abuses son and father ends up dead. Guilt-ridden son runs away and is taken in by older mixed-race gay Jewish couple. They all live the carefree hippie lifestyle until the former girlfriend shows up with a "you want somma this you gotta come home and get a job" attitude. Of course he moves back only now the place is a ghetto and the nasty uncle is the head gangbanger. Son is elected Mayor, cleans up 'hood and has his own kid. The circle of life.

Urban relic

An ornamental streetlamp surrounded by old rusty fences shows its age in a nearly vacant industrial area.

Witchy Tree?

For some reason I think of a witch when I look at this shagbark tree.  How timely and appropriate for Halloween! (Now I have the Eagles' Witchy Woman song stuck in my head.)
